The Internet is a great resource for finding the best air travel deals, and to find what people are actually paying for the advertised deal. A classic rule of thumb is not to settle for the first website that offers discount fares. Refer to several travel websites before deciding what you think is the best deal.
For flights within and originating from the U.S., Cheaptickets.com is one of the big players in the online airfare-shopping arena. You can use their price alerts tool, which lets you set your price for a particular trip and alerts you to closest matches. Other prominent websites for deals on domestic flights or flights originating from the states are Orbitz, Priceline.com and Hotwire.com.
For international fares, some of the popular sites are Expedia.com and Travelocity.
Internet Airfares is the online service of Destinations Unlimited, a travel agency that scours out low airfares. The site provides a list of 42 North American airports. Clicking on an airport displays the most recent discount fares from that city to other destinations.

Discountfares.com claims to have the best domestic and international airfares available. The site specializes in consolidated and discounted international fares, the hubs being Mexico, Central America, South America and Europe.
Kayak.com is a search engine that digs other web sites for low fares and provides links to sites where you can book travel online. Kayak has launched a service called Buzz, which gives the customer a chance to see what people are paying for the deal they get.
It also allows you to study the range of airfares for a particular trip for the past three days, which helps form a base for finding the best deal. This tool is helpful in chalking out a vacation budget for last-minute or planned trips.
